INSIDE THE 2010 WORLD CUP

Serbia’s frustrating run continues

Serbia’s miserable spell in Austria continued as they were held to a goalless draw by Poland on Wednesday night as they head towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Radomir Antic’s men suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to New Zealand in Klagenfurt on Saturday, a defeat which prompted condemnation from the fans. Their dismal start to this match was almost made worse in the seventh minute as Dejan Stankovic hobbled off with an ankle injury amid heavy downpours in Kufstein. However, the Inter Milan midfielder was able to come back onto the pitch.

Messi talks up Argentina’s hopes

Messi, the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, has enjoyed another phenomenal year at club side Barcelona, winning the European Golden Boot with his 34 La Liga goals and also finishing as the leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League for the second successive year with a further eight. Much is now expected of the 22-year-old in the FIFA World Cup, but Messi has shrugged that off, saying: “At this stage I don’t have to prove anything. I’ve come there to do things well for me and for my team-mates.”

What do you make of your squad?

Now that the coaches have had their say, FIFA.com wants you to have yours. So, what do you think of your nation’s squad?

Brazil weather Zimbabwe storm

Brazil weathered a Zimbabwe storm before scoring twice late in the opening half to set up a 3-0 victory in a pre-2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa warm-up game. It was easy in the end for the team ranked first in the world against one that does not even feature among the top 100, but the South Americans stamped their authority only after surviving several goal-mouth scares. There will be one more African safari for the Brazilians, against Tanzania in Dar es Salaam next Monday, before they face likely Group G whipping boys Korea DPR on 15 June in Johannesburg.

Germany face early test of mettle

Group of death’ may be a well-worn tournament standard but it is an epithet that could apply to this section. Germany, who share the record for most FIFA World Cup™ finals with Brazil, will cast a shadow over their rivals’ preparations given their tradition of high achievement at this level. Yet the semi-finalists from 2006 were hardly alone in taking the fast lane to South Africa, with Australia, Ghana and Serbia all reigning supreme in their qualifying pools. The first two of those sides also gave eye-catching performances four years ago and are unlikely to stand on ceremony here, while Serbia’s talent production has never been in doubt.

Who should be Rooney’s partner

Wayne Rooney is an automatic in the England team. However, debate continues over who should partner the 24-year-old in attack at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Fabio Capello has utilised Gabriel Agbonlahor, Darren Bent, Carlton Cole, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Emile Heskey there in recent matches. The Italian coach also has the option to deploy Michael Owen alongside his Manchester United team-mate, utilise Steven Gerrard in the position he plays for Liverpool, or give Bobby Zamora his first chance.

ROBEN VOWS TO BE FIT FOR THE WORLD CUP THAT KICKS OFF THIS FRIDAY 12TH JUNE 2010

The left winger Arjen Roben who suffered a tear to his left hamstring after scoring two goals in a 6-1 friendly win over Hungary on Saturday and it initially looked as though he may miss the upcoming tournament, but the player has revealed the tear is not as bad as first feared and that he will rush towards a World Cup comeback.

CAN 2010 Quarter finals:

Angola 2010 Africa cup of nations that began on a sad note with Togo’s national team being attacked by rebels in Cabinda and was later forced to withdraw from the competition has now reached the quarter final stage. The tournament that has so far been characterized by poor performance from almost all the nations involved with exception of 2008 champions Egypt is leaving a lot of question marks regarding Africa’s chances come 2010 world cup in South Africa. The nations that have made it to the quarter finals are Angola, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroun and Zambia.

The quarter finals will proceed as follows;

Sunday 24th January 2010

FIFA is not ready to punish Thierry Henry for the handball

Thierry Henry who was allegedly reported that he held the ball against Ireland in last November’s World Cup 2010 playoff. He won’t be suspended.

The Disciplinary Committee reached the conclusion that there was no legal foundation for the committee to consider the case because handling the ball cannot be regarded as a serious infringement as stipulated in article 77a of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. There is no other legal text that would allow the committee to impose sanctions for any incidents missed by match officials. And that means Thierry Henry will be at World Cup 2010 and will be free to play for France at the same time putting smiles on the France funs who are willing to be with the team till the last game

SC Villa opts out of the CAF confederation cup due to income shortage:

The latest news from the Villa Park can exclusively reveal that SC Villa will not take part in the soon commencing CAF confederation cup. Villa that won last year’s Kakungulu cup took this hard decision last week when they failed to get the needed money for them to get ready for the tournament.Apparently,Uganda’s most successful club is seated in the middle of the national league table with a lot of draws and losses. Simeon Masaba the Villa Captain also handed over his armband not until the Villa administration pays the players wages for the past three months.

Angola 4 Mali 4:

After the dark two days before the kick off of the 2010 Angola Africa cup of nations that involved Togo national team being attacked by Rebels in Cabinda, the much criticized tournament kicked off yesterday in style. The open match that started at 10:00pm Ugandan time saw hosts Angola take on Mali national team. The match that began at a high temper also ended at the highest pace ever. At half time, the hosts were already two goals up and Mali could not respond. These two first half goals were both well taken headers by Flavio.

In the second half, Mali pressured the home team to maximum.Alot of chances were missed by M.Diarra,Kanoute and S.keita.Minutes later, Angola got a third goal courtesy of Gilberto’s well taken penalty. In the 74th minute, Manucho made it four for the home team. The Angolan president who was in the stands looked so happy as his team easily showed their soccer ability. However, the 79th minute was the turning point of the match. With in just twelve minutes, Mali had already leveled the game and it was now four all. Goals from Seydou Keita (79), Frederic Kanoute (88), Seydou Keita (93) and Mustapha Yatabare (94) were just enough to secure apoint for Keisha’s boys. At the end of the day, both teams that looked so sharp at the front but weak in the defense ended sharing the three points.

Togo National football team attacked In Congo

Sad news as we get so close to the Africa Cup of nation 2010 in Angola , Yesterday it was bad luck for the Togolese National team as they got attacked by a group of armed men that belong to the FLEC (Forces For the liberation of Cabinda). The fact for now is that the attack was not football related and has nothing to do with CAF and the Africa cup of nations organizers.

The attack took place as the Togolese tour bus was crossing boarders from the Democratic Republic of Congo into Angola to Cabinda an oil rich area in Angola has always been wanted by the FLEC rebels. This where friendly matches between African national team have been taking place. The armed men fired bullet and the Togo players dived in the bus. The Togo national team security group fired back to calm the situation. Two Togolese Players were confirmed injured including one goal keeper who had a gun shot on one of his kidneys.

We are not sure whether the Togolese team will be able to participate in this highest profile event on the African continent that takes place every two years. Among the many players in the attacked bus was Togolese captain and premiership super striker Emmanuel Adebayo. It also confirmed that bus driver was killed during the exchange of gun with the Togo security group and the rebels.
